Credit Card Poker Sites

Most poker sites are credit card friendly. While you’ll find few, if any, poker websites which use American Express credit cards for deposits or withdrawals, most all of them accept Visa and Mastercard. I’ve even found a few that accepted Discover Card, so if you have any of the major credit cards besides American Express, you should be able to fund your casino account with a credit card.

Should I Use My Credit Cards?

If you feel an online poker room is a safe place to deposit money in, then using a credit card for poker deposits is a good idea. You can build up a lot of reward points when depositing cash in a virtual card room, often doubled up by the incentives offered at most gambling sites online. Furthermore, if some sort of dispute arises, it’s generally better to have a credit card company on your side than it is to have to inform money transfer companies and wire transfer outfits.

The question thus becomes whether it’s safe to deposit cash from your credit card into a poker website. I’d suggest you always read about the reputation of credit card-friendly poker sites before making a deposit. The great thing about online poker is that other players don’t shrink from letting the public know about their experiences. Visit one of dozens of poker communities on the Internet and you’ll find threads about the customer service at all the major online casinos and poker rooms.

Don’t take any one comment as the gospel, of course. Any online business is going to have its detractors and you never know why any one person is motivated to post their grudges online. Some people are trolls and other gamblers are just crazy, but I’m not telling anything you don’t already know. If you see a lot of complaints about a single online poker site and you begin to realize that poker room has a bad reputation among past customers, stay away at all costs.

Credit Cards and Online Gambling

For the most part, credit cards are the preferred method of depositing money online. I always suggest new poker players should become a member of one of the major online money transfers companies, such as Neteller, Moneybookers, or Ecocard, because these are often the quickest and cheapest ways to get paid. You’ll find that significantly fewer sites let people cash out through their credit card account.

Withdrawals using your Visa credit card on UB Poker range between $50 and $2,500 once every five days. There are no fees on these cashouts.

What Is Diners Club International?

Diners Club is a subsidiary of Discover Financial Services, a $3 billion American finance company and the issuer of the Discover Card. Diners Club started in Illinois way back in 1950, and was licensing the name out to European financial entities as early as the 1960s. In 2004, Diners Club entered into a partnership with Mastercard, and today you’ll see a tiny Mastercard logo on Diners Club cards. In 2008, Discover completed its purchase of Diners Club, so while it’s not as famous as several other charge cards, Diners Club International is well-connected.

Are These the Only Sites Using Credit Cards?

By no means. Look at any of the big online websites, from Pokerstars to Bodog to Absolute Poker, and almost all of them use Visa and Mastercard for funding accounts. A few gambling websites, such as Rome Casino, allow people to use Discover Card for deposits. Each and every casino has its own business arrangements, so check on each one of them to make sure they accommodate your favorite money option.

Why Can’t I Use American Express Credit Cards?

When you notice that websites like Sportsbook and Players-Only don’t allow poker players to cash out using their American Express card, this isn’t so much a choice on their part as it’s a choice on the part of American Express. AmEx is an elite company with an elite clientele and they want to avoid online gambling as part of their overall strategy of maintaining their brand name and reputation. American Express wants to protect its customers from fraud and they don’t want to deal with pesky backcharging institutions, so they avoid the industry altogether.

That might be painting with a broad brush, but American Express is a fifteen-billion dollar company, so they seem to have a pretty good handle on their business. They leave all that business for Visa ($33 billion in assets) and Mastercard (a mere $8 billion in assets), which may be one reason Visa is such a giant in world electronic commerce. It’s interesting to note that the European Union seems more concerned about the dominance of Mastercard in their market, which was evidenced after Mastercard was able to freeze the funds of Wikileaks in late 2010.
