Diners Club Poker Sites

Diners Club poker sites aren’t as plentiful as online poker rooms that take Mastercard or Visa, but you’ll find a number of the best Internet card rooms take Diners Club International. You might be wondering what Diners Club is, so let me define my terms a bit.

What Is Diners Club?

Diners Club is a charge card issued by a billion-dollar American finance corporation named Discover Financial Services, makers of the Discover credit card or “Discover Card”. Diners Club has been around since 1950, longer than either Visa or Mastercard, and has a long history in international finance.

Diners Club begin in Major’s Cabin Grill in the Empire State Building in 1950. According to legend, this was the first charge card of them all, and the first charge came on February 8, 1950 in Major’s Cabin Grill. The proprietors hit on the idea that high-end customers shouldn’t have to pay on-demand, but instead charge their meals and drinks and pay the entire bill at the end of the month. On such small ideas revolutions are made.

The Diners Club credit card in the early years became most useful for those well-off New Yorkers who wanted to travel and didn’t want to have to carry a lot of cash. It wouldn’t be long before financiers out in California were brainstorming what would become the Visa Card and Mastercard.

Diners Club International

In the 1960s, Diners Club was franchising its name out to various European credit institutions. Today, you’ll still see credit cards called “Diners Club International”–the official name of the charge card today. If you look closely as a Diners Club charge card, you’ll also notice a Mastercard logo on the plastic. This is a more recent innovation, after a 2004 partnership agreement with the more famous Mastercard.

The connection to Discover Financial Services is even more recent. Diners Club was bought out by Discover in 2008. So at which online poker sites can you use a Diners Club card?

Diners Club Poker Websites

So if you have a Diners Club card, I suggest you take a look at Cake Poker or Luvin Poker and see whether their games and bonuses match your poker expectations. Cake Poker offers a 110% deposit bonus up to $600 and a one-time $500 freeroll to new players. Luvin Poker offers a $1000 welcome bonus at a whopping 200% rate, so all you have to do is deposit $500 to get the bull thousand-dollar deposit bonus.

I have also seen the following information posted on another prominent poker website, but I’m not sure if this is accurate information or not. It might be that it was accurate when posted, but the financial arrangements have changed since then.

I went directly to Sportsbook Poker and Players-Only Poker to look at their deposit options, and both listed the following six options as the only ones available: Visa, EcoCard, Moneybookers, Neteller, Use My Wallet, and Cash Transfer. So you might try your Diners Club card at either Sportsbook or PlayersOnly, but I wouldn’t expect it to work.

More Diners Club Poker Sites

The following sites are other options you might try, since they are listed along as being Diners-Club International friendly. Again, since much of the information you see online can be dated, or simply wrong, you won’t know until you give it a try.

Whether any or all accept Diners Club International, you’ll be able to find plenty of poker websites using Diners Club International. You might ask why they don’t service them all. Discover Financial Services may want to limit its exposure to the online gambling market, due to the bizarre lawmaking situation back in the United States.

The 2006 UIGEA updated an old law from the early Sixties which was used to bring down mafia members, hoping to shut down online gambling in the states. This caused a lot of money transfer companies to get out of the U.S. market, and makes credit institutions a little nervous about working with online gambling operators. You never know when a new law comes along and makes a lot of hard work networking the business useless, which may be one reason there are so few Diners Club poker sites.
