Double-U es Opie

As far as WSOP predictions go, this year I could not have been any more wrong. At some point I ventured the guess that this would be the year in which not a single well known player would win a bracelet. I also came out and said to a few people that Phil Ivey wouldn’t cash in a single event. Lucky for me I didn’t put my money where my mouth was because I would have lost big time.

I almost made it through the whole WSOP without making a single blog post about it. It’s not because I don’t care or I think my readers don’t care about the WSOP, but let’s face it… Most of us have a twitter account or frequent the poker forums or subscribe to the poker news RSS feeds, or have some other way of finding out what’s going on at the WSOP. This blog is not exactly the place where you are going to typically find late breaking news. If I do mention the news, it will usually just be to make fun of someone or explain how poorly they play poker.

For the most part, all you need to know about the WSOP is that Ivey is just as good as everyone has always said he was. He’s in a position where he could certainly win the main event because he has locked up a seat in the November Nine. It’s great for Phil, but I’m just being honest when I say that hearing about how Phil Ivey is a god-like figure will become very annoying over the next few months. I had already started getting sick of it a few months ago and I think this is why I wanted to bet against him cashing in any event this year. In reality, I really hope he takes it down, I just can’t promise that I will sit and listen to Norman Chad and Lon McEachern as they slaughter the coverage.

Of course, I think that if Phil Ivey won the main event it could be really good for all of the online poker sites… especially Full Tilt Poker just because that is where Phil plays all of the time. Anything that is good for the sites is good for poker players in general.
