Don’t Forget Your Rakeback
Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 by Phil
I wish that I knew everything that I am about to tell you when I first started playing poker. If you are thinking about opening an online poker account, or if you already have an account and you are not recieving rakeback payments, this entry is written just for you.
The online poker world is fueled by affiliates that advertise for each poker site. These affiliates receive a small commission for each player that signs up through their banners. In some cases they receive a percentage of the rake that each player pays while sitting at the table. One day, the affiliates realized that they could recruit more players if they offered to share some of their affiliate revenue that was attributed to each player, and the concept of rakeback was born.
As a player has hands dealt to them, their rake is tracked by the poker room. At the end of the month the affiliates are paid a commission and they will then pay their players a certain percentage of the rake that they paid that month.
So why do I wish so badly that I knew this when I started playing? It’s not just because I missed out on rakeback payments for all of those years. It’s because at the large rooms like Full Tilt where I already have an account, I will never be able to get rakeback.
Once you have created an account, you are not allowed to create a new one for yourself…ever. So people like me who didn’t know about rakeback before we created our accounts are never going to be able to receive rakeback payments.
In reality, I suppose that people do open new accounts anyway. Once you start to play a lot of hands you can be getting hundreds or even thousands of dollars in rakeback payments put into your poker
account every month. I can’t say that I blame people for trying to create new accounts so that they can sign up through a rakeback site. It is often worth their money to do so. Their accounts are usually closed within a few months, and the player’s funds are transferred back to their old account.
Not all of the major sites offer rakeback. For instance, Pokerstars does not allow affiliates to offer rakeback to their players.
