Second Best Thing in the World
In his recent audio blog on Pokerroad.com Barry Greenstein discuss an unusual topic-poker players strange and cruel sense of humor. It is noticeable lately that Barry started to gravitate toward more philosophical and human aspects of the game. Probably, technical and strategy questions are less important for him and at the same time human side is getting more and more important. On many occasions, he stated that for him poker is very “reactive” game which means that anything and everything depends on his opponents abilities, state of mind and tendencies.
In his blog he talks about strange pleasure most players derive from misfortunes of other people. He says that his famous stoic approach to bad beats and general absence of reaction to the game results is an effort to prevent any sort of enjoyment by opponents. In a sense, it is an element of a constant psychological battle which takes place every day on the felt of poker tables. Mr. Greenstein actually claims that he remembers an exact time when he stopped complaining about poker outcome and adopted his present attitude. When he was a young player in University of Illinois he played a losing session complaining about his bad luck when an older player said to him: “Son, I don’t know what are you complaining about? You are doing second best thing in the world-playing poker and losing.”
