Is sneaking a peek cheating?

For a variety of reasons, I took a small poker sabbatical in August, but inevitably returned to the tables this week, and an interesting situation came up.

Sitting down at a $1-2 NL table at the Venetian, a very aggressive player to my right wasn’t protecting his hand and was showing me his hole cards every few hands. I honestly didn’t know what to do.

Now, I consider myself a very moral player. I wouldn’t even consider slowrolling, and I’m the type of person that if I caused you to fold your winning hand by accidentally calling out the wrong hand, I’d push you the pot. There just isn’t a place for cheating in poker.

But at the same time, isn’t it a player’s responsibility to protect his or her hand? Poker is a game of information, and giving away the biggest piece of information to your opponent is on you.

So is it immoral to look if a player next to you presents you with the opportunity, assuming you never even have to shift in your seat to get a better view?

Usually in this case, I tell my opponent for a variety of reasons. First of all, I don’t like to win that way. I like to win with my skills. Second of all, but not nearly as important, it does wonders for your table image when you point that out, and people don’t mind losing money to you as much, I’ve found. Being the nice guy does help sometimes.

But in this case, I took the opportunity. I don’t know why. Maybe it was because I was close to even on the trip to Vegas and didn’t want to end in the red. Maybe it’s because he was so aggressive. Maybe it’s because it was so obvious, on one hand I noticed even the guy to MY right could see. And also maybe it was because I really didn’t like the guy and felt he was a douchebag. I don’t know.

But I want some opinions on this matter. I am honestly stumped and don’t know what the correct answer is. In most cases, I tell, but presented in that situation again, I’m not sure I’d do anything differently. And if it comes up again, I’d like to be more confident in my decision.
