Who Regulates Online Poker?
Tuesday, September 28th, 2010 by Phil
Question: Who regulates online poker?
Answer: Depending on where you live, just about anyone (or no one) regulates online poker.
The United States government has taken the position that online poker is a violation of the Wire Act, so all real money poker sites are located in other countries. These other countries have regulatory bodies that regulate online poker. Usually you’ll find a link to the regulatory body on the homepage of the particular poker site.
Some of these online poker regulatory bodies are more strict than others. For example, some people on the Internet feel like the Kahnawake Gaming Commission in Canada is a pretty lax regulatory body. On the other hand, the Gambling Supervision Commission at the Isle of Man is pretty strict.
Below are the names of who regulates online poker in the jurisdiction where most of the more popular Internet poker sites are located.
Who regulates PokerStars?
PokerStars is headquartered in the Isle of Man. They’re regulated by the Gambling Supervision Commission there.
Who regulates Full Tilt Poker?
The Kahnawake Gaming Commission in Canada licenses and regulates Full Tilt Poker.
Who regulates Party Poker?
The Gibraltar Licensing Authority and the Gibraltar Gaming Commission are responsible for the licensing and regulation of Party Poker.
Who regulates iPoker?
iPoker is a poker site network operated by software corporation Playtech. (Their brand name used to be Playtech Poker, which made a lot more sense to us.) The rooms that share this network include Titan Poker, Celeb Poker, and Mansion Poker, among many other rooms. The regulation and licensing for the rooms on the iPoker network vary according to where the particular poker skin is located.
Who regulates Ongame Network Poker?
The Ongame Network is owned and operated by bwin Interactive Entertainment. They’re regulated by the Kahnawake Gaming Commission. Online poker sites included in the Ongame Network include bwin, Cherry Casino Poker, and Hollywood Poker, among several others.
Who regulates Microgaming Poker?
Like Ongame and iPoker, Microgaming is a host for poker games on various websites. Some of the sites included in their network? NordiceBet Poker, 32Red Poker, and Spin Palace Poker are representative, but the network includes quite a few more poker sites besides just those. The regulation and licensing of the poker sites in the Microgaming Poker network probably varies based on the location of the business which owns the specific skin.
Who regulates the Cereus Network? (or, who regulates Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker?)
The Cereus Network owns and operates both Ultimate Bet and Absolute Poker. They’re licensed the Kahnawake Gaming Commission, who is also responsible for regulating them.
Who regulates the International Poker Network? (Boss Media Poker)
The International Poker Network is the brand name for the poker network operated by Boss Media. They power several poker skins, including Yahoo Poker (in the UK only), Poker Heaven, and Diamond Bet, among others. They’re regulated in Sweden, by the Swedish government.
Who regulates Entraction?
The Entraction Network is a smaller network of Internet poker sites which includes skins like 24h Poker, Devilfish Poker, and Pinnacle Sports. Like the International Poker Network, they operate out of Sweden.
Who regulates Everest Poker?
Everest Poker is regulated by the government of Malta.
Who regulates Cake Poker?
Cake Poker is regulated by the government of Curacao.
Who regulates Bodog Poker?
The Kahnawake Gaming Commission regulates Bodog Poker. (Bodog is one of our favorite places to play, btw.)
Who regulates Merge Poker?
The Kahnawake Gaming Commission regulates Merge Poker.

As you can see, most online poker sites are regulated by government bodies in smaller countries in the world. (The Kahnawake Gaming Commission is governed by an Indian nation in Canada, for example.) The regulatory agency that seems most trustworthy and rigorous is the Isle of Man agency that regulates PokerStars.
All poker sites in France are regulated by the French government, even if the poker site is regulated somewhere else. A poker site without a license from the French government isn’t allowed to operate there legally at all.
