Zynga Considers Entering Real Money Gambling Market
Monday, January 23rd, 2012 by Phil
Zynga just announced on January 21st 2012 that they were considering entering the real money gambling market. Since opening up in 2007 Zynga has grown in a massive company that recently had its IPO in the United States. The stock was sold at $10/share at the IPO, but quickly fell below the IPO price point and settled at around $8. The stock jumped up roughly 5% on Friday when Zynga stated that they were currently considering entering the real money gambling industry in the United States.
The 1st game that Zynga released when they launched in 2007 was Zynga Poker. Since launching on Facebook, Zynga Poker has also released mobile apps and can be played on the iPhone and Android among other devices. It has been reported that a total of 7 million people play online poker at Zynga Poker everyday for fun and up to 30+ million people every month. Zynga Poker doesn’t offer real money poker right now, but they did confirm that they’ve been researching the industry recently.
Zynga Poker has stated that they’re in talks with several partners right now to find out more about the industry. The spokesperson for Zynga Poker didn’t state who the company was in talks with, but I’m sure everyone interested in the US online gambling market would love to be able to tap the user base of Zynga Poker. The user base at Zynga Poker is bigger than any real money poker site by a long shot, but it’s hard to say how many Zynga Poker players would play for real money in a regulated market.
Right now Zynga Poker makes money through advertisements plus money from players purchasing virtual chips. The company has been able to make a ton of money, but there is no doubt that real money gambling is a way more lucrative market. Zynga always stated that they weren’t interested in the real money online gambling market in the USA, but with online poker becoming legal at the state level in the USA Zynga Poker has changed their mind.
Zynga has plans to open a new virtual portal called the Zynga Casino. Zynga Casino will allow players to play Zynga Poker, Zynga Bingo and a collection of Zynga Casino games once they’re developed. The new virtual casino could be perfect if they decided to launch real money games in the USA. With online gambling regulations being passed in the USA it could open up the market to huge social giants to enter the space and take the market share away from the online poker giants everyone plays at today.
US poker players I’m sure don’t mind where they get to play, as long as playing is legal and safe. Playing real money poker with Zynga Poker would be a great situation, as the company is publicly traded on the NYSE. There is no sign that Zynga Poker will be offering real money gaming anytime soon, but it’s a good sign to see companies like Zynga Poker considering entering the market.
