Free Poker Articles

Free Poker Articles

The Internet has no shortage of free poker articles. Poker players are always trying to improve their poker skills, and the Internet made it easier to do so.

Free poker articles are made available by webmasters who run poker sites. Players can find information on everything from poker strategy to the rules of any given poker game.

Why spend money buying poker books or joining poker training websites when you can find the information for free?

Some of the poker information online is wrong or misleading. If you buy a book written by a renowned poker theorist, you’re getting the real deal. But on the Internet, you’re at the mercy of anyone who can write 25 sentences in a row, whether or not they know anything about winning poker strategy.

Where to Find Good Poker Articles

Good poker articles are readily available, but it’s common to run into the same article (paraphrased) multiple times. What’s worse, you’ll sometimes read the same strategies and concepts from many people.

It doesn’t do you much good to learn how to play pocket aces pre flop 100 times over.

Diversify your approach to the game. Trying to follow one set of advice is a common mistake that results in low (or non-existent) profits.

Take in all of the information you can, and then form a unique playing style. If you are playing the same way as the guy next to you, you have no edge.

Poker forums are an excellent source of good poker articles. You’ll find lots of banter, but you’ll also see long time posters make long, detailed posts that are better than most of the articles you’ll find on a static web page. Two Plus Two is an especially good place to find this kind of solid poker advice. The stickied posts there are often the best poker articles on the Internet.

Sometimes great posts need to be dug up. Browse through topics that interest you. Most replies are one liners and useless banter. But sometimes a great poster will offer profound insight into a hand. Many of the top online high stakes poker players have improved their skills by discussing hands with fellow poker players on Internet message boards.

Another way to find great poker strategy articles is by following links from one site to another. When you find a site with a great links page, bookmark it, and take a look at the content on those sites. Google isn’t the only or even the best way to find good poker content on the Internet. I’d much prefer to get real recommendations from real people.

Don’t assume that all links to articles are trustworthy or worth reading. Just as there is no shortage of free poker articles, there is also no shortage of free junk poker articles. It is vital that any player be able to tell a good poker article from a bad poker article. Picking up a bad habit from a free poker article is worse than learning little from an article that you paid for. Check your sources and make sure that all of the links you follow are on the straight and narrow.

Googling

As fantastic as Google is, it can lead poker players to sites where they won’t learn as much as they should. Plenty of great poker sites offer free articles, but finding them can be a challenge. Using Google to locate poker articles is a sound strategy, but you’re sifting through weeds and looking for flowers.

An inexperienced poker player might find this to be an impossible task. It would be like asking an American to determine whether a Japanese teacher was teaching grammar correctly. If you don’t know what you are looking for, it will be tough to find anything.

Context clues are one way to determine whether the article you found is valuable. Does the site you are on look shady, spammy, or otherwise untrustworthy? Use your common sense when looking for free poker articles. An intelligent webmaster is not going to produce a shoddy website that doesn’t look credible. One sign that a site might be untrustworthy is how aggressive the ad placement is. Overwhelming aggression with advertising is usually a sign that the content on a site isn’t up to par.

Some crappy poker websites might offer a great poker article or insight, but those are the exception. Many poker webmasters are out to make a quick buck and don’ care whether or not they add anything to their user’s experience.

Poor grammar, poor spelling, garbled writing, and excessive advertising should all cause you to question the quality of the poker advice on any given website.

Online Poker Articles

Online poker has changed the game poker so much that many books are now obsolete. Internet poker articles might lose value over time too. Try to gauge the publication date of any article before you take its advice seriously. If you’re reading reviews of different poker sites and see that the author recommends PartyPoker as the best site for US players, you know that site is outdated. The strategy articles there might be less current too.

Poker strategy changes. Limping into pots in order to see more flops is old advice, and it’s bad advice. Modern poker players need to adapt to the modern, aggressive playing style that’s commonly played now. Tight passive players are going to lose a lot of money at today’s poker games. Playing really tight was a great strategy ten years ago. Now it’s a great strategy for losing money.

Free articles are a way to bolster your poker knowledge without draining your wallet. Many poker websites offer quality information that can make you a better poker player. Your job is to find good poker information and apply it at the table.
