How to Win a Double or Nothing SnG
Monday, February 7th, 2011 by Phil
Double or Nothing SnG Strategy Tips
When you’re planning your strategy for how to win a double or nothing SnG, keep the following in mind:
- You need big edges to justify risking your stack.
- On the bubble (with 6 players left), you should almost never get all-in unless you are a short-stack.
- It’s often correct to fold premium hands late in the game, even AA.
Some poker players are surprised that it can be correct to fold pocket Aces preflop, but consider the following scenario with blinds at 50/100. What if there were six players left, four of them had 2500 chips, one had 500 chips, and the last had 4500 chips. Now imagine the player with 500 chips folds pre-flop, the player with 4500 chips goes all-in, and you’re left to act in the big blind with AA.
Even if your opponent has KK here and you have him dominated, you’re still going to be knocked out of the tournament about 20% of the time. It’s correct to fold here because there’s more than an 80% chance that the 500 chip stack, or someone else even, will bust out before you do. The flat payout structure of the double or nothing sit-and-go tournaments creates strange situations like this where it can be correct to fold pocket Aces to a shove pre-flop, especially if there is a short-stack that can bust out.
Winning Double or Nothing Sit and Go’s: Playing the Early Game
Early in the tournament, blinds are small relative to the stacks, and many players are left at the table. Play tight. Only look to steal blinds and find big edges post-flop. You only need to double your stack once to have an average stack size for making it into the money, so getting your money in as even a 55/45 favorite is a bad ide. There’s too much play left in the tournament.
At a table with tight players, you can build a decent sized stack without risking a significant percentage of your own stack. Just remember to fold in the face of a re-raise or if they lead into a flop that you’ve missed. You only have to catch a hand against them once in order to have a decent stack and position yourself to win.
Double or Nothing Sit and Go Bankroll Requirements
Good poker players can get an edge in double or nothing sit and go tournaments. But those edges are smaller than you’d have playing cash games or other poker tournaments.
So don’t play without a deep bankroll. And keep in mind that you need a larger sample size in order to evaluate your actual win rate.
