Biggest Mistakes in Micro Stakes Poker
Saturday, October 11th, 2008 by Phil
Here are some of the biggest mistakes that I see online players making in the micro stakes games.
Players often call raises against aggressive players and just fold their hands when they miss a flop. Although this is a safe play, you are going to be losing a lot of small pots and doing a lot of guess work. The aggressive player will have an inherent advantage against you over the long run.
A lot of players at the micro stakes level are easily frozen by scare-cards on the river. This results in these players missing crucial bets on 5th street when their opponents certainly would have been willing to call.
It is important to recognize when your opponent has given up on a hand and is ready to fold to a bet.
Many players don’t realize that if you have a straight or flush draw with 2 over cards, your hand will be about even money to win against most pairs that your opponent is likely to be holding.
When you consider the implied odds of your hand and the additional possibility of being able to bluff your opponent on the turn, these drawing hands can be very powerful in a no limit hold ‘em game.
This is something that I am guilty of no matter what stakes I am playing. Sometimes players get caught up and think that someone is trying to bluff them. Maybe a player will flop a good hand and he just can’t bear to think that he has been outdrawn. There will almost surely be times when your gut tells you that you are beat but you just can’t fold your hand. This isn’t a small mistake either. This is a mistake that can cost you a lot of money.
