Slowplaying in No Limit Texas Holdem
Monday, February 21st, 2011 by Phil
One of the most over used plays in no limit Texas Hold’em is slowplaying. Also known as sand-bagging or trapping, the slow play has the potential to win you bets that would not usually have entered the pot had you shown some aggression and bet yourself but in order for a slowplay to be successful a number of criteria need to be met otherwise you actually risk not only losing value from your hand but you could even finish up trapping yourself!
If you are taking part in the Betfair GSOP 6 and are considering slowplaying your hand you must first ensure that you have a very strong hand, usually top two pair or better, though a set is usually the hand of choice. You must have good reason to believe that the free card you are about to give your opponent could improve them to a hand that would be second best and that the same free card would not improve your opponent to a better hand.
As an example, you are on the flop holding AcAs and the three community cards read Ad-5c-9s there are no cards that can fall on the turn that your set of aces would be worried about so this would be an ideal situation to slowplay your hand, especially if the pot was raised preflop. Your opponent may think your check indicates you are scare of the ace and bet the turn either as a bluff or with a much weaker hand than yours. However, if the flop read Ad-Kd-Js you should be less inclined to slow play as there are plenty of cards that could peel off on the turn that could improve your opponent to a hand that beats a set.
In order to win some of the Betfair gsop 3.3 million you will need to mix up your play in order to win chips from the more skilled players but be aware that although slowplaying can be very profitable it should be used sparingly otherwise the more observant players will quickly adapt to your “trappy” style and you will become easy to play against and lose value from your big hands.
