Timing is Everything in Poker

Timing. We’ve all heard about this whimsical concept.

Some call it coincidence, others call it fate. It’s one of those things that drives me crazy.

“I was at the right place, at the right time” when recently I asked my buddy on how he met his future wife.

You go to a movie and you get the last two tickets before it’s sold out. Perfect timing.

You’re waiting on a friend and decide to get a cup of coffee because he’s a little late, you enter the coffee shop and bump into an old friend who you haven’t seen in years and have wanted to contact. Wow. Coincidence or perfect timing?

Columbus gets lost in the Atlantic and discovers America. Wrong turn, right time.

Poker, as in life is all about timing also. Sometimes you make a move with two suspect cards and it works out.

Case in point. I’m playing a home tourney and I decide to play this hand aggressively. I raise with 5/6 diamonds in late position trying to steal some blinds and limpers (dead money). I get one caller. I flop two 6s. He raises I go all in, he calls with 10/10. I take down a big pot. It was perfect timing on my part.

Other times you have a dominating hand and it doesn’t work out…

Later on I have JJ and I lose to 77 when he boards a straight. I was stacked this time, so it was perfect timing on his part.

There’s four players left and 3 get paid. I’m one of them. I try and take out the bubble boy and I lose 2 straight races against him. Good timing on his part, bad timing on my part.

The bubble boy finally gets knocked out when he goes all in with KK and faces AA.

“What a bad time to get KK” we all say.

I finish in 3rd when I have A/10 diamonds on the button. I raise. SB re-raises I go all in. He calls. He has A/Q game over. 90% of the time he has nothing and I win the blinds.

Is it bad timing, coincidence or is it bad luck? Or is it all of these things?

But then again, poker as in life, it’s those little surprises that we encounter daily that makes our lives interesting.
