What Is a Well-Timed Poker Bluff?

Friday, February 4th, 2011 by Phil

How to Time Poker Bluffs

A key component of poker is bluffing. Learning how to bluff opponents will give you an advantage in game play. Bluffing can also prevent players from learning your betting strategy.

Situations Where Bluffing is Good Strategy

Bluffing can be a critical part of your game if you know when to bluff. Before you bluff, you should know whether you can pull it off. Factors affecting that include:

  • The type of players in the game
  • The number of players
  • Your own image that you have presented in the game
  • You ability to pick up on other players cues
  • The size of the pot that you are playing for
  • Timing in the game

Before you bluff, you should have an idea of the type of players. Players who call every bet are impossible to bluff.

It only makes sense to bluff against one or two opponents. If you have three or more opponents involved in the hand, don’t bluff.

Consider your table image. Bluffing works best when you’ve won a couple of hands with a strong hand at the showdown. Stop bluffing if your hand has been caught in the cookie jar already.

Reading players; tells will give you an advantage in the bluffing. If you know when yor opponents are holding weak hands, you’ll be able to bluff them. Don’t bluff players with strong cards.

And don’t bluff when the flop has face cards showing.

The larger the pot, the harder it is to win with a bluff.

Your timing should be impeccable when you bluff.

The Best Bluffing Strategy

Winning poker players know the best bluffing strategies and tactics. Take into account all of the tips above when deciding whether or not to bluff, and only bluff when you’re likely to win the pot.
