What I’ve Learned from Poker
Thursday, February 3rd, 2011 by Phil
What I’ve Learned From Poker
Poker is a timeless game that shows the true nature of an individual in a high stress situation. It shows me where my flight or fight intuition lies and helps myself learn more about my limitations, my flaws, and my strengths. True revelation of myself is never as prevalent as when money is involved.
Lessons the Game Has Taught Me
The most important lesson I have learned in both the casinos and in the Internet gaming rooms is the value of patience. Not patience until the next card or the next hand, but to be patient until the time is right, no matter how long or far away it may be. Winners in this game are not made hand to hand but over a career of winning. When I look at the final tables of the world poker tournament, many times, the same players are there from year to year. Practice, dedication, and actively learning to improve game play are the only ways that amateurs become professionals. A fluke may happen from time to time but in the end, skill is the deciding factor.
Lessons the Players Teach
Players are a plethora of data that can transfer across gaming tables and, as any professional would tell you, can transfer across board room meetings as well. Players’ ticks and giveaways have been easy to read when playing amateurs but as I have progressed to higher limits and higher stakes these aides to the game are increasingly difficult to ascertain. These skills are invaluable to have. The defensive side is important in the business world as well. Darwin was wrong about survival. We have progressed as a society past the strongest and now the most intelligent is the strongest link, the wittiest now determines the future and that is what every player aims to achieve.
Lessons I Have Learned About Myself
Self-revelation is the most important skill set that can be had from this game and I have spent more energy trying to advance this skill set than any other aspect of the game. Knowing myself helps me to guard against my weaknesses as well as giving me the ability to change myself and my persona from game to game, which can ensure confusion of my opponents and raise the odds of the pot going into my pocket. Although my wife believed the game was taking away from my work she soon noticed the correlation between my game play and my business and personal relationships. Her inflection of my skills included four simple but important observations.
- My ability to read her wants and desires with increasing accuracy.
- Restoration of balance to my life through patience.
- At work, my ability to read between the lines and sift fluff from hard facts.
- At home I have become increasingly patient with my children.
Every player and every game teaches me more about myself and my game play. Every pot is a lesson that progresses my game as well as my personal life.
