Posted on February 2nd, 2012

Joe Hachem has announced that he will continue participating in major poker tournaments. This dispels the belief many held that he will limit his tournament activity and focus on developing the Asian Poker Tour and AsianLogic Group, now that he is on board as their new ambassador.

WSOP Main Event Final Table Is Set

The main event resumed today at the Rio with 27 players left. Among the first well-known players to be eliminated today was Phi Nguyen in 26th place. Brandon Cantu, my pick to win the tournament, was eliminated a few hours later in 20th place. While holding 9-9 against Peter Eastgate’s  A-Q, Eastgate was able to make a flush after 4 diamonds fell on the board. This eliminated Cantu in 20th place for just over $257K .

Not long after Cantu was eliminated, Tiffany Michelle was knocked out of the tournament in 17th place. On a board of A-10-9, there was a 500,000 bet and 1 call. Tiffany raised all-in for approximately 3.5 million and was immediately called by Peter Eastgate. Tiffany flipped over A-J for a pair of aces, while Eastgate showed A-A for a set of aces. Tiffany failed to improve her hand on the turn and was subsequently eliminated. Tiffany was the last remaining female in the main event. Her 17th place finish earned her a total of $334,535.

Play continue well into the evening and the early hours of the morning. After a greuling day of play, the tournament field was finally narrowed down to 9 players. For the next few months, these players are going to become somewhat of a spectacle in the poker world. Whether you like the idea of the final table being delayed or not, I think everyone is interested to see what happens between now and November.

Here is the line-up of players and chip counts for this year’s final table:

Dennis Phillips 26,420,000
Ivan Demidov 23,920,000
Scott Montgomery  19,300,000
Peter Eastgate 19,300,000
Ylon Schwartz 13,040,000
Darus Suharto 13,020,000
David Rheem 10,880,000
Craig Marquis 10,120,000
Kelly Kim 2,900,000

Most of the TV viewing audience will not be familiar with any of this year’s final table participants. I’m hoping that some of these guys will prove to be interesting or at the very least; comically pathetic. I have a feeling that we are going to find out that at least one of these guys is still living in their mother’s basement. I’m sure in the next few weeks we’ll get to find out about who these guys are. I suppose that the new format is designed to try and address this problem by introducing the viewers to all of the unknown players.

If you haven’t heard about the changes in this year’s final table structure and TV coverage, you can read about it here: Main Event Final Table Delay.

You can catch ESPN’s coverage of the preliminary events starting on July 22nd.
